The first top of the tree represents the creation of spiritual and physical world ending at Malkuth.  That is to say the spirit/soul descend through the tree of life going through many dimensions and manifest on the physical earth.  And here we are spirit/soul in the body experiencing physical existence.  This is the school where we learn our lessons and we are spirit/soul climbing upward towards GOD.   This is the journey of the spirit/soul.  However, the majority of humanity during their sojourn often forget about our origin as spirit/soul and we completely immersed into physical existence of glamour, glory, crime, violence and do everything to satisfy our physical senses.  In the process we reach old age and we never realize that we have caused so much suffering to other humans and inhabitants of the earth without any atonement, we, the spirit/soul depart from the physical body.  Once we are physically dead all of our doings will be our soul memory and we will realize how we have failed our purpose of living in the physical.  Such soul, they have to go down to the lower tree instead of going up to the light.  They have to go through their experiences and by the mercy of God's providence, they can realize their failures in the tree below.  And once they done their spirit/soul search, desire for God and light they can go upward to the tree of life and rectify and strive for light, union with the divine though physical life.

The people who committed a grievous crime torturing animals, mass murders, such souls who have to descend down to the bottom of the lower tree.  From there they have to work their way up.  This is my take on the journey of the spirit/soul.  If I have offended anybody I am sorry.  This is my opinion only.  I must say even heaven, hell everything are the domain of the Creator, Providence is available to all who seek and desire.
